Ragas Live | A 24hr festival rooted in the unique time cycle of Indian Classical Music
Raga's Live is an immersive 24hr, 24 set NYC based festival rooted in the unique time cycle of Indian Classical Music where specific musical modes are performed at specific times of day.
Roughly meaning “color the mind,” raga are musical modes or essences from the Indian Classical Music tradition. Each raga has its own range of emotions associated with a specific time of day. The music harmonizes holistically with the subtle changes in light and with the various emotions associated with times such as sunset, high noon or midnight.
The festival was founded in 2012 by the Brooklyn based musician and radio host David Ellenbogen. The concept was to beam out 24 hours of raga on New York City’s WKCR 89.9 FM which largely conformed to this time cycle (raga samay). Now in its ninth year, the festival has grown to have an international impact, expanding the audience of raga with more media and community partners and dedicated listeners all over the globe. The festival features both traditional Indian Classical music and contemporary cross-cultural collaborations.
Due to COVID-19, the 2020 edition of this festival will be live-streamed.
On November 21st-22 the Rubin Museum of Art, Pioneer Works, Brooklyn Raga Massive and NYC Radio Live are all combining forces to present for the most ambitious broadcast of Ragas Live yet. This years editions will include over 90 artists from 13 cities, including the major torchbearers of traditional and new genres of music such as Terry Riley, Toumani Diabate, Zakir Hussain, and Betsayda Machado.
